First day of school (open)
It takes Alex a long time to drag herself out of bed that first Monday. Her two previous experiences of school have told her that the kids are mean and already have their cliques; the work is either boringly irrelevant or easy; and that she can't learn anything in the classroom but only when she sat down and worked it through with her mum. A sob rips through her and she buries her head in the pillow to deaden her cries until she is able to repress the howling monster of grief. She then drags herself out of bed, hoping movement and immediate tasks will keep the beast locked away.
She dresses in her most concealing clothing: black jeans and a long-sleeved maroon sweater. After visiting the bathroom, she heads down to the bathroom, where her brother is already eating a bowl of cereal. He grins at her and she glares back, not with any real anger but because it is far too early and there is no cause for such enthusiasm. As well as being an optimist, Richard also benefits from having no previous school experience and the fact that he is entering as a freshman, so everyone else will be new to the school too.
Following breakfast, which is conducted in differing states of silence while listening to Breaking Benjamin, they pick up the school-bags they packed the night before and traipse out to the bus. To Richard’s disappointment, it's not a yellow school bus but an ordinary municipal bus that they have to catch. The pair sit together, near the back, getting progressively silly as they practice their American accents and pretend to be 5-year-olds headed to their first day of school.
The bus sets them down in the main square of Mystic Falls – prompting Alex to complain how small and parochial the town is – at 7:10 and they walk the rest of the way. They are, as planned, early enough to make it to class on time, despite the heavy crowds and unfamiliar layout.
“See you at lunch,” chirps Alex, sardonically, as she leaves her brother in the main hall.

Re: First day of school (open)
Kol honestly could not believe that he had decided to be a student of all things. What was he thinking it had been years since he was tutored by the most educated tutors yet as his cover he chose to be a high school student. An exchange student from Britain to be correct. He got up when he heard his alaram clock. Walking out of the little home that he had compelled a young family to allow him to stay there.
He carried no books as what was the point he knew everything anyways as he lived it though he did have a note book mainly to sketch with when he got bored. Arriving at Mystic Falls shortly after the seven he began to search out his classes when he accidentally bumped into someone.
"Sorry." He said with a hint of an British Australian mixed accent. The two places where he spent the most time during his exile. He wanted ro keep walking but figured that would be rude. So he tried smiling but could not muster one. Was he nervous yes he did not want to blow his cover nor did he want to draw attention to himself.
Biting his lip as a sudden waft of blood hit his nose. Why did he think he could do this he had no idea. The whole high school thing was going to be harder than he thought it would be.

"No worries," smirked Alex. Her shoulders, which had hunched at the unwanted contact, relaxed at the sound of his voice. "I had no idea there were any other foreigners here. I thought I'd be stuck with only my brother for company." She widened her smile, despite her self-consciousness over showing her teeth.
She was anxious to get to class early and to dodge any attempt by the teacher to re-enact those scenes in films where the new kid has to introduce themselves to the whole class. However, she was willing to risk cringe-inducing embarrassment in order to lay the ground-work for a friendship with the only other British person in Mystic Falls. Especially as it was a guy who wasn't smiling to try to gloss over the accident, rather than some vapid girl.
